The setting of this cartoon is the Senate. The Senate is composed of senators, they are part of the legislature and make laws. The only open door is for the Monopolists, People are not allowed in seeing that the door for 'people' is closed. I do not think it is right that only the monopolists get to be inside the Senate and determine who gets elected and what ever else goes on inside. It secrets the public from knowing the truth. The large men in the rear of the room are Monopolists or, special interest groups. These large men are here to influence Senators on their way of business, weakening laws so they can't intervene with business.

Major Events Before The Civil War

1. Around 1858, the United States was divided geographically, the north and south had different religous views and other differences depending on the region they were from. The south was dependent on slavery for the labor they spend on agriculture (e.g. farming). The north became more industrialized.
2. The country was so divided by the issue of slavery, California needed the Compromise of 1850 to become a state. The Compromise of 1850 let new states decide whether they wanted slavery or not.
3. Around this time, many southern states were seriously considering secession, which is a term for a state leaving the union.
4. Many people from the north hated slavery and a group of "abolitionists" which was a group of people who helped slaves escape slavery, helped the slaves by hiding them along the path to Canada. Also known as the Underground railroad.
5. When Uncle Tom's Cabin was published, northern abolitionists became angry and the southern people felt like it was a book that criticized their way of life
6. Two politicians became famous for their slavery debates : Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln.
These two politicians felt slavery was unjust, although they had two perspectives through the way they saw slavery. Douglas believed it would be up to the state to decide whether slavery should be allowed in that state or not, while Lincoln believed slavery should not be allowed at all.
7. On December 20, 1860, after Lincoln was elected president, the states began secession. The first state to secession was South Carolina.

Dear diary, 
Heelay here sitting down on the hill outside of town. Its so amazing how my lifestyle and the world itself has changed these past 300 years. I remember being in my small village back on my island when Columbus first arrived. He then brought me to a more civilized yet unfair society in a far away land. I had no rights when I came here. I still don't. I heard from a friend of mine that anti-federalists would support the constitution in return for the Bill Of Rights. Basically stating they would take the Bill Of Rights from the people living in the states. We would have no rights! Some of these anti-federalists were Patrick Henry and George Mason. It is now the year of 1819. America as we call it, started with 13 states. Georgia, Rhode Island, Connecticut, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. By this year, America added Florida, and southern parts Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. I hope that somehow the constitution can be passed without the Bill Of Rights being taken away from everybody.

Marijuana is going to be taxed by 25%. The price of Marijuana would be very high.

4. Why was Oregons Refenderum not passed?

There could be a battle between voters and Federals in the supreme court while trying to legalize Marijuana.

         I think the article was targeted to all the people who smoke/support marijuana.

Progressive Era/Movement - A political reform in 1890 to the 1920's in which people became active in society to make a better government.

Muckraker - A journalist who exposed scandals and caused trouble for the people he wrote about.

Social Gospel - A protestant Christian intellectual protestant movement  that focused on social problems. Talked about them in churches/out in streets/ and so on.

Social Darwinism - A theory that seperates individuals and judges each group by wealth/society and so on.

Americanization - The process in which a foreigner becomes "more American" like following customs.

Nativist/Nativism - favoring the american born natives vs. immigrants.

Europe(Eastern and Southern) - Europe is a continent located north west of Asia and north of Africa. Bulgaria,Croatia,Czech Republic,Hungary,Poland,Romania,Italy,Greece,Spain, and Portugal are all in the eastern and southern part of Europe.

Political Machine - A disciplined political group under a powerful leader that advertises to guarantee a win during voting.These people get rewards for advertising.

Andrew Carnegie - An individual that owned the largest steel industry in the 19th century

Horizontal/vertical integration - Collaboration of businesses to somehow promote/advertise status of their business. Profits/growth and so on.

Urban - a populated area comparible to a city

Upton Sinclair - American Author and 1 time candidate for governer of California who wrote almost 100 books including "The Jungle"

Meat Inspection Act - An act in which meats are inspected so that it is safe to be sold in markets.

Trust/Monopoly - Unlawful companies that collaborate with each other.

Graft - A courruption of power misused by government officials for private reasons/own benefits.

Hull Houses(Settlement Houses) - Important reform institutions in the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Jane Adams - an invidividual who founded the Hull House of Chicago and philosopher
