Education Has Changed. A little or alot?
"What examples from your years as a student are different from a student in the early 1900's? Whats still the same?"

Personal voice on page 283 describes how cruel school can be to the students.

How did "The Jungle" affect the way Americans thought about the ways meat was produced?
Americans wanted someone to do something about the filthy meat packer production. After reading "The Jungle," Americans thought of the Meat company poorly. The unsanitary conditions that was exploited in the book, disgusted the readers, and of course would disgust anybody. Who would want to eat anything thats been infested with germs?
Upton Sinclair was a progressive. He wrote the book "The Jungle" which was read by many Americans. "The Jungle" made a huge impact to the Americans after learning what was happening to the meat they were buying. It became an issue big enough that President Roosevelt passed a law called the Meat Inspection Act. This was a progressive acheivement, if it weren't for the book that Sinclair wrote, we would all probably not know about it at all.

Labor Unions Emerge PG. 67
Essential Questions:
1.) In its entirety, labor unions were(good or bad) & why?
Based upon what I have read, labor unions were good because they fought for what they believed was right. Labor unions were to help workers get what they deserve, they worked in unsafe working conditions, they were underpaid, child labor, and more.
2.)Describe the sweatshop & how 146 women died in a fire, & how it could have been prevented.
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was a sweatshop in which 146 women died. These women died because all but 1 exit was locked. The 1 exit door that was open was blocked off by fire. Some women rather jumped out of the 9th story building instead of wanting to burn in the fire. If there was a sprinkler system inside the building, as well as giving a key to some of the workers to unlock exit doors, these women could have lived.
3.) What is a scab? Why would unionized workers not like scabs?
Monopolists did not want unions because they wanted more money to themselves, paying workers less and making more money for themselves. A scab is a person who takes over a striker/labor unioners job as a replacement for less pay. Union members would not like scabs most likely because scabs do not help the labor unions, rather they are helping the factory owners. The objective of labor unions are to better the benefits of the workers to become more fair.
4.)Describe the type of people who formed the IWW union. What does IWW mean?
Many factory and sweatshop owners disliked the vision of unions like the IWW because the IWW welcomed African Americans. They were a group of radicals and Socialists. IWW stands for "Industrial Workers of the World."

I believe labor unions were necessary for today, if it weren't for the labor unions back then, the people of today would be in the situation they were in a century ago. It was also appropriate because it was unfair the laborers had to be treated and paid what they were.

"Laborers were forced to work 14 to 16 hour work days in order to fulfill their quota, they worked in unsafe conditions, and they were paid $400-$500 a year, while living costs estimated $800 a year."
"While the workers wages went down, the prices for living remained the same and the laborers were inevitably bound to their company through debt."
"As his fortune grew, the poor were stuck in a rut. As a consequence to this unfair treatment, workers began organizing labor unions."The first quote represents the hard unfair working and living conditions laborers had to deal with especially with the low pay they had which couldn't support them at all. They were just put into more debt. The second quote shows the misfortune of these laborers as they were accumilating debt which debted their lives to the company because they were underpaid and paid even less. The third quote explains the workers reason for starting laborer unions. As the employer/business owner made more money, the poor were still poor, the rich grew richer, causing laborers to form labor unions.
